The left hand side of the screen contains a list of the contents of a folder, with:
-
a line for each file or sub-folder in this folder, letting you rename or select it (so that it may be moved, copied, zipped, or deleted)
-
some controls to let you upload new files into this folder
Note: if you click on a sub-folder in the right hand side view, it will open the folder, while if you click on a file then the file will be downloaded to your computer. If you want to download the contents of a folder then you must click the word zip in the (as zip) text after the folder name.
For each file is listed:
-
the size of the file (this is zero for folders)
-
a link to download the file (or download a zip of the folder!)
-
a link to access the file via a website if one exists (or for folders a link to create or edit the website that is linked to it)
-
a field to rename the file or folder
-
the date the file or folder was created
The File Storage screen lets you store and manage files at FastMail.FM. You can upload files from your computer to your File Storage area, and rename, copy and delete files in your File Storage area. You can attach files from your File Storage area to email messages that you send. You can also make files in your file storage area available to be viewed by others via the web.
The File Storage area uses an interface similar to the Mailbox screen. On the left hand side is a tree showing all the folders in your file storage area. If a folder has a '+' next to it, then that folder has subfolders, and you can click on the '+' to expand it. Click on the name of a folder to view its contents. On the right hand side of the screen is a list of files and sub-folders in the current folder. You can download the entire contents of a folder by clicking the (as zip) link after the folder name. You can also use DAV or FTP to manage your files without using the web interface. This makes uploading and manipulating large numbers of files easier.
To move files or folders, first use the folder tree to expand folders so that you can see the destination folder. Then select the items you want to move, and click on the [«] button next to the destination folder in the folder tree.
Copying is exactly the same, except just before clicking on the [«] button, click on the drop down list at the top of the folder tree, and select 'Copy'. Then when you click [«] the items will be copied, rather than moved.
The 'Actions' menu lets you do various things with your files and folders. Actions will be performed on all the items that you have selected, using the checkbox for each item. If you select the current folder, then the action will be performed on this folder, and all files and subfolders within this folder.
To use this menu, first select the files or folder that you want to perform the action on, using the checkboxes. Then select the desired action from the drop down list, and click on the 'Do' button.
The actions you may perform include:
-
Delete - deletes the selected items
-
Download Zip - the selected items will be placed in a zip file, and the zip file will be downloaded to your computer
-
Extract from Zip - if any of the selected items are zip files, then the contents (including any folders) will be extracted into this folder
-
Create Subfolder - this simply creates a subfolder in the current folder. Any selected items are irrelevant to this action
To upload a file you first need to use the folder tree to navigate to the folder that you want to contain the new file. Then, click on the 'Browse' button in the 'Upload' area near the bottom of the screen. A window will pop up allowing you to select the file you wish to upload. After selecting the file and closing the 'Browse' window, you should see the name of the file in the 'Upload' area. To complete the upload, click on the 'Upload' button.
You can also choose to rename the file when it is uploaded, and if the file is a zip file you can have it automatically unzip its contents into the folder instead of being uploaded. You can also choose to overwrite any other files with the same name when you upload.
To upload multiple files into this folder, click on the 'Upload More...' button. This will take you to a screen with a list of 'Browse' buttons where you may select many different files. Click 'Upload' to upload the files. When you are finished with uploading files, click 'Done'.
One reason downloads fail is if you are connecting to FastMail.FM servers through a secure login. You are taken to a secure login if you press the 'Secure Login' button on the login screen, or if you use https://www.fastmail.fm to go to FastMail.FM, instead of http://www.fastmail.fm.
The easiest work-around is to try the download on a regular login. When you connect to the server on a secure login, many browsers mark the page as not to be downloaded, and do not allow you to save the file, or view the source of the page. You can also configure the browser to cache the page. In Internet Explorer, you can disable the 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' in 'Advanced settings' to configure this.
